Engineering Biomethane Purity: Industrial Standards & Decarbonization

Bridging feedstock heterogeneity with strict grid injection specifications (EN 16723-1) through advanced three-stage membrane separation, regenerative biological desulfurization, and automated pressure-swing thermodynamics.

From Raw Biogas to Pipeline-Grade RNG

Raw biogas harvested from anaerobic digestion typically consists of 50–65% Methane (CH₄), 35–45% Carbon Dioxide (CO₂), along with trace impurities such as Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S, up to 10,000 ppm), volatile organic siloxanes, moisture (saturated vapor), and particulate matter. To convert this low-calorific fuel into pipeline-quality Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) or vehicle-grade Bio-CNG, an upgrading plant must strip away non-methane compounds to achieve CH₄ concentrations exceeding 97–99% while maintaining methane slip below 0.5%.

As an ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 certified manufacturer with Class II Contracting Qualifications in Environmental Protection Engineering, we provide complete, pre-assembled, CE-certified biogas upgrading units built with high-selectivity polyimide hollow fiber membranes and intelligent PLC-controlled gas conditioning loops.

CE Certification & Safety Integrity Level (SIL)

Our biogas upgrading facilities conform strictly to the European Union Pressure Equipment Directive (PED 2014/68/EU), ATEX Directive (2014/34/EU) for explosive atmospheres, and Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC). Systems integrate Ex-d explosion-proof electrical controls, multi-point optical methane telemetry, dual venting safety circuits, and SIL-2 certified emergency shutdown architectures.

Standard Compliance Guarantee

Effluent gas streams satisfy the strict chemical and calorific profiles demanded by EN 16723-1 (Natural gas and biomethane for use in transport and biomethane for injection in the natural gas network) and DVGW G 260 / G 262 parameters.

Manufacturing Excellence

Chinese Factory Resilience & Supply Chain Efficiency

How our vertically integrated Shanghai facility eliminates supply chain bottlenecks, lowers capital expenditure, and accelerates site deployment.

Vertical In-House Fabrication

By conducting design, pressure vessel rolling, automatic orbital welding, chemical passivation, and PLC programming under one roof, we eliminate subcontractor delays and maintain rigorous quality verification across all ASME/PED pressure boundaries.

Tier-1 Component Integration

We combine domestic economies of scale with internationally recognized brands: Siemens S7-1500 safety PLCs, Atlas Copco oil-free screw compression stages, Evonik polyimide hollow fiber gas separation membranes, and Endress+Hauser instrumentation.

Full Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)

Every biogas upgrading skid undergoes multi-stage helium leak detection, electrical insulation verification, hydrostatic pressure validation, and automated control sequence testing at our factory prior to overseas crating and shipping.

Next-Gen Engineering

Technology Roadmap: The Future of Biogas Upgrading

Anticipating the technological convergences that will define clean energy infrastructure over the next decade.

CCUS & Food-Grade Liquid CO₂ Valorization

Transforming the permeate waste stream into a commercial revenue source. Our advanced cryogenic condensation units liquefy separated CO₂ into 99.9% purity industrial or food-grade liquid carbon dioxide, achieving 100% carbon utilization.

Biological Methanation (Power-to-Gas)

Coupling off-grid green hydrogen production with biogas facilities. Utilizing hydrogenotrophic archaea within pressurized catalytic bioreactors, residual CO₂ is reacted with green H₂ to synthesize additional biomethane (4H₂ + CO₂ → CH₄ + 2H₂O).

AI-Driven Membrane Health Prediction

Integrating pressure transducer edge telemetry with cloud digital twins to monitor real-time membrane selectivity drift, calculate boundary layer concentration polarization, and optimize thermal regeneration cycles autonomously.

Lifecycle Assurance

Localized Support & Global Compliance Framework

Ensuring operational reliability, environmental safety, and smooth local grid interconnection across international borders.

Technical FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Comprehensive engineering and procurement answers for EPC contractors, biogas project developers, and plant operators.

What parameters are required to generate an accurate technical sizing proposal?
To provide an exact mass-balance calculation and proposal, our engineering team requires: (1) Raw biogas flow rate (Nm³/h or SCFM), (2) Gas composition breakdown (CH₄ %, CO₂ %, O₂ %, N₂ %, and H₂S concentration in ppm), (3) Relative humidity and operating temperature ranges, (4) Available on-site electrical supply characteristics (voltage, frequency), (5) Desired product biomethane destination (grid injection pressure and purity requirements, or vehicle Bio-CNG at 200–250 bar).
How does your three-stage membrane configuration minimize methane slip below 0.5%?
In our proprietary three-stage cascade layout, raw gas enters the Stage-1 membrane modules where the bulk of CO₂ permeates out. The retentate moves through Stage-2 to yield final pipeline-grade biomethane (>97–99% CH₄). The permeate from Stage-2, which still contains residual methane, is recycled back to the compressor inlet rather than vented. Stage-3 treats the Stage-1 permeate to scrub remaining hydrocarbons, venting a virtually pure CO₂ stream and maintaining overall system methane recovery above 99.2%.
How do you handle aggressive volatile organic siloxanes and hydrogen sulfide?
Upstream gas conditioning is vital to extend membrane service life beyond 5–8 years. Our systems employ a two-step conditioning train: First, gross H₂S reduction via chemical dry scrubbers or biological trickling filters down to <50 ppm. Second, deep chilling and condensate removal down to a 3°C pressure dew point, followed by dual alternating guard beds filled with impregnated activated carbon and specialty organosilicon adsorbents, guaranteeing siloxane concentrations remain below 0.1 mg/Nm³.
What European Union CE conformity standards are verified on your skids?
All Tongjie biogas upgrading plants destined for European and global markets comply with the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED 2014/68/EU), the ATEX Directive (2014/34/EU) for explosive equipment atmospheres (Zones 1 and 2 compliance), the Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive (EMC 2014/30/EU), and the Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC). Full documentation including hydrostatic testing certificates, welding procedure specifications (WPS/PQR), and material traceability dossiers (EN 10204 3.1) are standard deliverables.
Can the upgrading skid be integrated with on-site Bio-LNG liquefaction systems?
Yes. When upgrading for cryogenic liquefaction into Bio-LNG (-162°C), CO₂ content must be reduced below 50 ppm to avoid dry-ice freezing inside the cold box. Our hybrid membrane polishing and regenerative molecular sieve temperature-swing adsorption (TSA) trains achieve this deep purification reliably, directly feeding mixed-refrigerant or Stirling-cycle liquefaction modules.
What are the lead times and on-site commissioning timelines?
Thanks to modular prefabrication in Shanghai, typical manufacturing cycles range from 10 to 16 weeks depending on skid capacity and gas conditioning complexity. Because units are shipped fully assembled and factory tested (FAT), on-site installation, tie-ins, and commissioning typically take only 15 to 20 days.
